01- What is Judo?
Judo is a grappling martial art and an Olympic sport. Similar to Greco Roman wrestling, the objective of the sport is to either throw your opponent with speed, force, and control flat on their back, or pin, choke, or armbar them into submission. Striking is not allowed and only the elbow joint may be locked.
Who plays Judo?
Most of the world! Japan, France, Korea, Cuba, Russia, Germany, Brazil and Holland are generally considered the most dominant judo countries in the world.
Why Judo?
Whether you want to compete or improve your personal fitness, Judo is an amazing way to stay in shape and learn an ever-evolving Olympic sport and martial art. Much like wrestling, Judo is considered a “thinking” sport, and studies have shown that judo can improve cognitive functions, and it is a sport that one can continue for a lifetime.
Can I play Judo?
Nearly anyone can! We currently have students who are anywhere from just under 5 years old to over 70 years old, who are all at varying levels of skill in the sport. We offer classes for children and adults at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as private lessons and access to competition coaching.
02- About AJM
AJM was founded by Sensei Dennis Scheib. After serving in the Marine Corps, he began competing in local tournaments, which led him to training in Japan for a month at the Kodokan. He was a throwing dummy for the 1976 Japanese Olympic team and trained at the Tokyo police department martial arts training facility. Upon returning to the States, he moved to Atlanta and became more involved with the local judo scene, opening Atlanta Judo Midtown in the summer of 1995 (then known as Atlanta Judo Academy).
Taking over from his father, Sensei Matt Scheib is the owner of AJM. He is a yodan (fourth degree black belt) and a lifelong martial artist since the age of 4. Competing recreationally until 2014, he has trained in France, South Korea, and under USA Olympic coaches. His fight background has been a major resource to him as an Emmy-nominated stunt performer for TV and film.
Located in Piedmont Heights, AJM’s 4200-square-foot facility is a space for all ages, featuring sprung-floor tatami, climbing ropes, and a full fitness area for members and their families. Our instructors have over 150 years of combined experience on the mat and many train alongside their own children at AJM! Beyond our expert instruction in Judo, AJM supports stunt performers, previs, actor training, and film/tv stunt choreography.

"I've been training at AJM for 6 months, and AJM has reignited my long-forgotten love for Judo. It is an outstanding Judo school with an excellent technical curriculum. The teachers are extremely knowledgeable and experienced and genuinely care about each of their students' progress and well-being. The team is incredible, with everyone focusing on improving each other's skills. Matt is amazing at teaching the kids and my son is always excited about the next practice. I just wish I had visited this place earlier." -Simon S

"My family and I have been attending AJM for five years now. My son loves going to Judo now. The first year was tough for him, but once he started to learn how to fall and some basic throws, he lost all fear. He enjoys going to competitions and has earned metals at all tournaments, which is a direct result of the instruction there. AJM constantly brings Olympians like Colton Brown, Nick Delpopolo, Chris Round, and others to help supplement the instruction to a very high level. Love to see how my son has changed from a shy that seemed to get hurt at almost anything to a tough confident young man. Very grateful for AJM! If there were 10 stars I would give that, but I will settle for a perfect 5 stars!" -Raul B

“My daughters have been training here for 3 years and love it! AJM strikes a good balance between hard work and fun. Kids are building a firm Judo foundation while having fun and playing games that strengthen their technique. The Sensei and coaches are familiar with kids of varying ages and skill level which really make a difference. We also love the respectful culture of Judo and how good sportsmanship is emphasized. While my girls are learning valuable self-defense, they are also learning to be respectful to others, have self-control, and practice humility in every class.” Clarissa M

"Great place to learn both a traditional martial art and an Olympic sport. Decades of combined experience with an open and welcoming atmosphere. Also a great way to get in shape. Nothing like tossing around your body weight for an hour or two to cut inches off your waistline." - Richard P.

"I have been training at AJM since 2020. It's a wonderful environment! Everyone is friendly and helpful, regardless of your experience level, athleticism, or competition goals. Every sensei has an extremely deep understanding of Judo as well as the skills to pass that knowledge on to others. Beginners receive focused support on the fundamental skills that will allow them to protect themselves and their partners in sparring. Randori (sparring) is held after each class, giving you an opportunity to work on what you've just learned (or refine your favorite techniques) live. If you're on the fence, try the 2-week trial! Don't wait until you think you're 'fit' enough to do Judo. The training itself is an excellent way to build your fitness in a great community while learning and having some fun!" -Cameron B.

“This is a great school with a good atmosphere. The instructors are attentive and patient when teaching the techniques and are committed in making sure students have a positive experience on their journey in Judo. The club also has a great group of students, no attitudes just a good spirit of comradery.” -Stanley S
