Hi EVX Families,

I know changing martial arts schools is a big decision, especially after investing so much time into a place and community you care about.

Josh and I have been partners and neighbors in the martial arts community for a long time. Over the past several months, we've spent a lot of time talking about how to make this transition as smooth as possible. We're honored that he trusts us to continue your martial arts journey.

In this Starter Kit, you will find information about Judo, AJM, how we will manage belt ranks, and membership options. We are also offering complimentary 2-week trials to anyone interested in exploring AJM. Use code EVX2026 to access a free 2-week trial, and please list EVX as the referral source when you sign up.

If you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out. We know this is a big transition, and we're committed to making it as smooth as possible for EVX members.

I hope to meet you and your family on the mats soon.

Best,

Matt Scheib

01- Why Judo?

Judo is a grappling martial art and an Olympic sport that emphasizes technique, timing, and leverage over strength. Similar to wrestling, the objective is to throw your opponent with speed, force, and control, or win on the ground through pins or submissions. Striking is not part of judo, making it a sport centered on skill, strategy, and respect.

Why Play Judo?

Whether you're looking for a new challenge, a way to improve your fitness, or an activity that keeps both your mind and body engaged, judo has something to offer. Often described as "physical chess," judo develops problem-solving, coordination, confidence, and resilience while providing a full-body workout. It is also one of the few sports that people can enjoy throughout their lives, whether recreationally or competitively.

Who Plays Judo?

Judo is practiced by millions of people around the world and is one of the most widely participated Olympic sports. Countries like Japan, France, Brazil, South Korea, Cuba, Germany, and the Netherlands have strong judo traditions, and you'll find players nearly everywhere around the world.

Can I Do Judo?

Probably! At Atlanta Judo Midtown, our students range from 5 to over 80 years old. We offer beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes, along with private instruction and competition coaching. Whether your goal is fitness, self-defense, competition, or simply trying something new, we'll help you find the right place to start.

02- About AJM

Founded in 1995, Atlanta Judo Midtown has spent more than 30 years helping children and adults learn lifelong skills through judo. Today, the school is led by Sensei Matt Scheib, a fourth-degree black belt, lifelong martial artist, and Emmy-nominated stunt performer with international training experience in Japan, France, and South Korea.

AJM was founded by Matt's father, Sensei Dennis Scheib, whose decades of experience and training at the Kodokan in Japan helped establish one of Atlanta's longest-standing judo programs. That tradition of technical excellence and welcoming instruction continues today.

Our 4,200-square-foot facility in Piedmont Heights features sprung-floor tatami, climbing ropes, and a dedicated fitness area. Our instructors bring more than 150 years of combined judo experience, and many train alongside their own children, creating a supportive, family-friendly community where beginners and experienced athletes train together.

03- What About Belt Ranks?

Because this is a unique situation, we won't ask EVX students to start over. You'll continue wearing your current belt while you settle into AJM’s program.

Over the next six months, we'll get to know each student's skills, knowledge, and comfort with our Judo curriculum. That gives us time to evaluate where each student fits within AJM's promotion system without the pressure of immediately changing rank.

Our goal is to respect the work you've already put in while maintaining the standards of our program.
