March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month. Falls remain the leading cause of traumatic brain injury in adults over 55, and backward falls are among the most dangerous due to the risk of direct head impact.
Balance & Backfalls is a focused Strong & Stable workshop that teaches adults how to protect the head and cervical spine during a backward fall. This is a skill-based workshop that teaches you what to do when balance is lost.
In this 60-minute session, participants will learn the mechanics behind safer backfalls and practice on padded mats. The emphasis is on managing momentum, distributing force through the body, and preventing the head from striking the ground.
Participants will learn how to:
Control the body’s response when falling backward
Protect the head and neck during sudden loss of balance
Reduce impact through proper arm and body positioning
Transition safely from ground to standing
The objective is not to eliminate falls. It is to reduce the likelihood of head injury when a fall occurs.
This workshop is exclusively for adults 55 and older and no prior experience is required. During the workshop, you can move at your own pace, and the instructors will offer modifications if needed. You do not need to be athletic to participate! The only physical requirement is that you MUST be able to get up off the ground unassisted. Space is limited!

Strong & Stable is a skill-based safer-falling program developed at Atlanta Judo Midtown for active adults over 55. Using progressive techniques adapted from judo and stunt training, participants build practical falling competence in a supportive, small-group setting.
Training focuses on:
Body awareness during unexpected movement
Faster, more coordinated balance responses
Safer force distribution during ground contact
The goal is increased confidence, preserved independence, and reduced risk of serious injuries.
