What is Strong and Stable?

Strong and Stable is a Judo-inspired program developed by Atlanta Judo Midtown. For over 30 years, AJM has provided high-level judo instruction and taught hundreds of students how to throw and fall, safely. This program is designed for adults 55+ who want to learn how to prevent falls and reduce their impact.

In Judo, understanding how to fall is one of the first skills learned (ukemi, or fall-breaking). This method helps distribute impact and protect the body. By combining Judo, strength, and balanced- based training, Strong and Stable students will learn how to prevent falls, and avoid serious fall-related injuries.

AJM instructors received training with SureMove, a Dutch-based Judo program with over 15 years of experience in teaching the elderly how to fall safely,  and get up quickly. Under the guidance of AJM’s owner, Emmy-nominated stunt man and 4th degree  black belt, Sensei Matt Scheib, Strong and Stable was developed for the Atlanta community.

Classes are taught at AJM’s dojo, located in Piedmont Heights. The 4200 sq ft  facility is equipped with padded flooring where students use large foam crash pads for falling-related preventative exercises.

Why should I be concerned about how to fall?

By 2030, the global population aged 65 and above is estimated to reach a staggering one billion. Falls are the leading cause of injury for this demographic. Older adult falls are common, costly, and preventable.

The fear of falling breeds a scary cycle—avoidance of activity leading to muscle deterioration, a decline in balance, and subsequently an increased likelihood of falls. This fear isn’t merely physical; it can spiral into isolation and loneliness, impacting mental and physical well-being. Studies have shown that the fear of falling directly correlates with the likelihood of falling

What are the benefits of joining the Strong and Stable program?
The Strong and Stable program is designed to boost students' confidence and falling-competence. Each week, classes focus on strength-based movements that support key falling techniques. With guided instruction, practice on padded mats, and a supportive class environment, participants develop essential skills to stay active.

This program teaches participants how to:
- Build coordination
- Build awareness
- Build strength
- Learn how to fall safely

What is the class structure and times?
The program is once a week for 6 weeks, and each class is 1.5 hours long. Students can expect to begin with warm ups and targeted exercises, followed by progressive learning of falling techniques, and finish with practice on our crash pads.
Program offerings vary by month, and students stay with the same group over the 6-week course.
